When I took up the Java course in 2004/2005, Sun had just introduced Java 1.5 with generics and was in beta. I did use the new features in Java 1.5 and my assignment was graded without any complaints or penalty over having used the beta version of Java.
Today, generics are the norm in software development and firms encourage their development teams to use generics in their software projects.
